President Obama presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the greatest civilian honor in the land, to 21 incredibly deservingindividuals on Tuesday.
And when it was presented toEllen DeGeneres, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
Its easy to forget now, when weve come so far, where now marriage is equal under the law, just how much courage was required for Ellen to come out on the most public of stages almost 20 years ago, Obama said during the ceremony at the White House.
“What an incredible burden that was to bear, to risk her career like that. People don’t do that very often, and then to have the hopes of millions on your shoulders,” he added, before cracking an Ellen joke.
“But it’s like Ellen says: ‘We all want a tortilla chip, that can support the weight of guacamole,’ which really makes no sense to me, but I thought it would break the mood because I was getting kind of choked up,” Obama admitted.
Obama also presented the award to, among others, Lorne Michaels, Tom Hanks, Bruce Springsteen, Robert De Niro, Diana Ross, and Cicely Tyson, and also honored sports legends Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates.
But Ellen had a particularly tough journey to the White House, having forgotten her ID.
But apparently that wasn’t too much of an issue, and the whole “medal of honor” thing probably had something to do with it.
And because she’s Ellen, she managed to get everyone there to participate in the Mannequin Challenge.
That alone deserves some kind of medal.
Never change, Ellen.
